April Evil by John D MacDonald (Gold Medal 1-4128-4)

Gold Medal 1-4128-4

The stage was set. Harry Mullin hit town first. Harry had just made the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, and he was a little nervous about being seen…

With him at the rented house from which they planned to case the job was a girl named Sal, who had fallen into the easy sluttish runt of being a good woman to a bad man…

Then the Ace turned up. The Ace had been very good in his day, but he was going a little to flab, and maybe he had lost something in the guts department…

The last one into town was Ronnie. Ronnie had killed twelve men and two women in the past seven years, and had gotten to like his job – maybe a little too much…

MacDonald’s 1956 Cosmopolitan story, expanded just a bit.

Cover price: 1.95
Publication date: 1980-ish
Cover artist: Robert McGinnis

I’m not sure of the exact date of this edition (as if it matters to anyone but nitpickers and completionists) but it has a 1.95 price tag and an offer in the back from Columbia Book Service that expires 9/30/80. The printing history series is “17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9,” giving the impression this is a 9th printing but, since that information isn’t always accurate, who knows?
