The Far Cry by Fredric Brown (Black Lizard – 1987)

George Weaver rented a house no one else wanted because the last tenant had been murdered. George didn’t care about that at first, but then he got involved, more involved than he wanted to be. He saw the sudden terror in Jenny’s eyes, saw her back away from the knife, saw that she was too frightened to scream. The man moved toward her with the knife just as her hand found the doorknob and turned it. The door swung outward into the night and she whirled through it, running. Death ran after her.

I found a nice batch of these reprints at a seedy little shop in north OKC. The proprietor was of the mind that “if they’re old, they’re valuable,” regardless of the condition or content of books. He was stuck (and probably still is) with a bunch of stuff like How To Win Friends And Influence People, Scholastic editions of previously-published juvenile mysteries and coverless Harlequin romances. He’d also come to the conclusion that “new” used books were pretty much worthless and had the book above and 20 or so recent editions of classic pulp reprints for less than a buck each. They’re not quite as nifty as the originals but I don’t get out much anymore…and I’m cheap.
