The Executioners by John D MacDonald (Crest S295 – 1959)

Crest S295, 1st printing

An insane criminal threatens to destroy a family, and the police are powerless to protect them. For fourteen years convicted rapist Max Cady nursed his hatred for Sam Bowden into an insane passion for revenge. He lived only for the day he would be free – free to track down and destroy the man who had put him behind bars. Murder was merciful compared to what Cady had in mind – and what Cady had in mind was Bowden’s innocent and lovely teenaged daughter. . . .

Probably MacDonald’s most widely-known work and the basis for the 1962 & 1991 films titled Cape Fear.

I happened upon this little gem recently at a used book shop in Norman, OK, on a shelf filled with ’80s MacDonald reprints. Either it had just arrived or was overlooked by other collectors that I know frequent the shop…. or maybe (gasp) no one else wanted it.
