Respectability was his goal – murder the only way to reach it.
His spine crawled with sudden ice. He went up the staircase, reached the bedroom. Kit lay still and hideous, her dead eyes staring at the ceiling.
He let out a tremendous, agonized roar. Footsteps rushed behind him and he heard horrified gasps as someone tore him away from the lifeless form sprawled on the floor.
He looked half-crazed with grief, but inside he was laughing exultantly.
